Riddell Contracting Ltd. has played an integral role in the development of Owen Sound and surrounding region for over 50 years.
The business was established in 1946 by Elwood Riddell with the help of his brother-in-law Wally Peters. Electricians by trade, much of their work in the early years of business involved installing power lines to the rural areas surrounding Owen Sound.
The late 1940's and early 1950's was a time of change in the region of Owen Sound. It was during these years that the power utilities we now take for granted were centralized and introduced to the rural areas.
Riddell's business grew with the times. By the 1960's Riddell Contracting Ltd. employed approximately 50 people and had expanded to include: plumbing and custom sheet metal fabrication services as well. Service was provided throughout the Grey/Bruce region and to Manitoulin Island. The business was highly regarded for its expertise and quality in workmanship.
For many years the business was run from Elwood's home on 3rd Avenue West. By the 1970's, Elwood decided to move the business to the East end of Owen Sound where it remained until the early 1980's.
By 1984, Elwood was ready to retire. He sold the business to Wally and some of the other employees. Nine months later, the employees sold it to its current owner, Wayne King.
Soon after the purchase Wayne moved the business to its current location on 1st Avenue East, near the old CP Rail Station.
Riddell Contracting Ltd. currently provides sales ,service and installation for all electrical, plumbing and HVAC needs. There is also a full service custom sheet metal fabrication shop on the premises.
While there have been many changes over the years, good quality work and long term employees continue to be cornerstone of the business. Riddell Contracting Ltd. also continues to be a family owned and operated business.
